THE VAULT
"I have learned over the years who I am and who has contributed to my success. I have 100% desire, dedication, and determination running through my blood day and night and my success is owed to GOD and EVERYONE who has given me a chance to help them achieve their dreams AND my dreams"---Coach Poe
BELOW ARE SOME MEMORIES OF SERVING OTHERS.
Unfortunately, I have no pictures or videos for the first several years of coaching and competing since cameras and high speed communication were not so readily available as they seem to be in today's world. I am making a special note to those who started me in the right direction.
Powerlifting is my element. I will always continue to leverage the discipline and art of lifitng heavy weight into inspiring, leading, and encouraging others to "create separation" to succeed in life and sports"---Coach Poe

I just kept asking God to get me to the next rep and before I knew it I had hit 12 reps with 300 pounds and my back, hips, and shoulders were still in tact. My perfect practice of my form paid off as well. I know I could get more reps with more focused "rep" training..."---Coach Poe

"I accept this challenge with pleasure and look at this lift as my official comeback lift after my injury from last September of 2009. WORKING BACK TO THE TOP
Coach Poe hits 280 pounds as he continues to get stronger during his herniated disk rehabilitation----"It was easy, but very scary at the same time...I still lack great hip drive, but I thank God for the strength to make a comeback"----Caoch Poe
"I am very grateful to be pushpressing again. My strength is still there...I just have to be patient during this rehab time and visualize "heavy weight" again....225 pounds is better than 45 pounds a few weeks ago..I am definitely making progress weekly".....Matt Poe
"This jump was the most difficult thing I have done in therapy, but I ended up about 30 inches off the ground landing on a 10 inch box for 45 reps. I left the therapy center "pain free" as well. I have not deadlifted yet, but this is a great sign. This workout came the day after I pulled sleds at Vanderbilt for 400 yards. I hope this inspires anyone who is in recovery.....you can do it!! The mirror says it all!!"----Coach Poe
102 days ago I was injured. On the 90th day and after hundreds of hours of rehab, I pressed 45 pounds for 10 reps. Yesterday, the 101th day, I pressed 190 for 10 reps. The doctors said there was a good chance that I'd never pushpress again. I guess they did not take into account the human "heart".

"12 weeks ago I could not walk. Today, December 17, God gave me the ability to use my pushpress talent again with a clean and press of 45 pounds and 30 reps with no pain. The road now begins to compete again. My biggest fear of picking the weight up off the ground was onvercome and the press felt excellent. 2 hours of pool every day, 2 hours of PT, and a few hours in the weightroom a night has paid off....the last 1%"....Matt Poe

BELOW IS COACH POE'S 4TH BENCH WORKOUT DURING REHABILITATION
"I remain in pain. I don't like the bench form at all and it is very scary trying to find out how far I can push my back and especially my hip drive which I don't have at all. I am still very weak and can still do no leg work, but gaining ground. I will pushpress again"----Coach Poe

"Let's call this a "Poeup". This was my first attempt at this movement. I can tell you that my abs, hips, and balance were challenged, not to mention, my lower back and delts. I really feel like a created separation in these attempts. I was in normal man's weather though...not winner's weather.....I look forward to 100 plus degrees and all the humidity the atmosphere can dish out"....Coach Poe
Coach Poe demonstrates his "Poepull" with 380 pounds. Yes you are seeing this "Poepull" for the first time.
"The work in both directions is not for the weak of "heart". The hips, thighs, glutes, shoulders, chest, and grip is getting killed. Perfect training for any type of deadlift. This type of training makes my "best" definitely better than your "best".....Coach Poe
Coach Poe finishes his last set of 5 reps with 280 pounds. This dedication took over three hours.
"The worst thing about this dedication was that it was not in "winner's weather". It was only 90 degrees on the patio with no humidity. This reason is why I did so many sets as well as training my strength endurance at a sub maximal level.....I am really coming after YOU this year..."Coach Poe

310 Pound Overhead Press - Week 3 - Dallas Training
"Today I felt as strong as an ox. It was a little below 40 degrees outside and windy which made it feel colder. My takeoff was very powerful, but my left arm is behind which causes the bar to sway into horrible form. My line of power was so strong that I ended up pulling out of it with not too much trouble"----Matt Poe
The camera battery went dead and unfortunatlely we did not get the finish on film, but this is a great example of recovery.
"The weighted pullup is another test of true starting strength. Your true back strength is tested to the MAX"---Matt Poe
"The Trap Bar deadlift is for sure, to me, harder than the straight bar deadlift. There is no flex and little chance to recover from any type of change in the line of power. This lift is much harder to nail a missed attempt as well. The lower back stress is enormous"---Matt Poe
The attempt below is after a prior miss with less weight.
The below benchpress is the "only" form that is acceptable in competition and is perfectly executed by Matt Poe, no shirt, no sinking the bar into the chest, and complete control ----RAW!
"True strength in the benchpress can only be achieved using the below form. All other tricks and shirts is not acceptable. I would like to see high schools, colleges, and pro athletes adopt this real test of strength using the correct form"---Matt Poe
"If you are not using the below form, you are not executing a real benchpress. All the great benchers appreciate this form. All the others are LOST"---Matt Poe
"I am trying to lead by example"---Matt Poe
This pull was done with terrible form. I had a bad day on form, but the strength in my lower back felt good. As Josh Bryant would say, "If it comes off the ground, no matter the form, you have to complete the lift"---Matt Poe

"Today my left bicep was killing me. My intensity was down. I just got the weight I needed to keep my cycle on track. Thanks Curtis for the video"---Matt Poe
"If you look closely, my right arm extends quickly waiting on the left bicep to relax. I had to come back down on the right side momentarily to let my left catch up. This technique throws my balance off, but as you can see, I recovered"---Matt Poe

The "ZERCHER SQUAT" is one of the hardest lifts on the body internally and from head to toe. Matt Poe squats 505 pounds with relative ease, considering he has not done them in 7 months.
The below video is Matt's RECOVERY from the above lift. Take note athletes of the importance of his ACTIVE RECOVERY.
Often times, vision is not clear and heart rate is very fast after the load of ZERCHER'S. A lifter must be very experienced in his effort to rest.

The best strength athletes can increase their levels of intensity as one increases the volume on a TV. I will hit 400 by next May."---Matt Poe
"Strongman type events are odd in nature. Your body must be perfected to stabilize heavy weights in every position. The ab strength must be incredible. This reason is why I am excited to have the chance to compete against these types of strength athletes in Texas"---Matt Poe

Below: Set Number One
"At the beginning of cycles, I like to train with lighter weight with no leg drive with 10 sets of work. This is by far the best shoulder exercise to prepare for the overhead press. You must have excellent ab strength"---Matt Poe
Below: Set Number Ten
"The above was set number 10. I had no physical strength left. Only mental strength worked at this point. I did well on this set since recently discovering a new mental drive"---Matt Poe
BELOW:ROUND 1 - YES IT IS FREEZING!
WARNING:DO NOT EVER ATTEMPT THE BELOW EXERCISE. YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR KNEE.
REMEMBER: YOU SAW MATT POE DO THIS FIRST.
THANKS TO MARK HENESSE FOR VIDEO HELP AND AUDIO HELP
"I had never done this lift before. Nor, have I ever seen this lift done by anyone else. This lift does not exist. I will never attempt this lift again. I probably should have blown my knee out. Think about what you are watching. The challenge is getting your feet under you. What an intense and dangerous movement"---Matt Poe
"My first round is 350 POUNDS on the trapbar, 150 POUNDS on the leg curl, and 110 POUNDS on the dumbbell deadlifts. I superset all lifts. The work time is about 5 minutes. I complete around 30 reps in each round. My intensity is about a 5 on a scale of 10"---Matt Poe
"The below video is the start of a mini cycle called PAIN TRAINING- reps of 5 or less with 60 to 80 percent of a light max"---Webmaster
"I figure the more pain I can tolerate, the more I can give to my opponents. By the way, gripping a 75 pound trapbar is enough pain in itself"---M Poe
"Most people have regular office furniture. Matt has an office in Belle Meade that is furnished with a squat rack, bench press, cardio equipment, pulldown machine, dumbbells, and an ab machine, not to mention MIRRORS"----Webmaster
"My office furniture is a tribute to my passion. Why would I want real furniture? Every now and then I like to hit a set of pushpress or abs while working on my business instead of taking a smoke break or walking outside as some people do"----Matt Poe
"A good example is the below video. I needed a break from crunching numbers and invoicing"
Mark Poe of Mark Poe Builders kindly narrates for me.
BELOW: NEVER BENCH WITHOUT A SPOT
"These presses are good training presses, but poor competition presses. I merely use this form to help facilitate bar speed off the chest and build eccentric control"---Matt Poe
"I actually hit maybe a 7 on the intensity scale. Working out at 4 in the morning in the winter in my garage can be a very humbling experience, especially with my friend the mega hex trapbar"---Matt Poe
"Enjoy the Rocky I music from 19....whatever. I cannot believe this guy works out with this garbage"---Webmaster forwww.mattpoe.com
WARNING: DO NOT EVER BENCH WITHOUT A SPOT
10 Set With 370 pounds
"I have officially started to train for the RAW DOG WORLD TOUR. I have top be prepared to rep heavy weight and max out. I am getting ready for any challenger to try to beat me in either case. I do not think anyone can beat my team."---Matt Poe

WORLD TOUR RAW DOG TEAM NAMED BELOW
Just another day of playing around with 300---Webmaster.
"I am just playing right now. My quest to 400 will begin soon. Be patient." ----Coach Poe
WORKING THE GRIP
"Sets of 10 with 335 pounds - NO WRAPS"
"I always try to save the hardest minor exercise for last because the end is where the thought of quitting usually occurs"---Coach Poe
"Grip is all about thumb strength. Wraps defeat that purpose. I rarely train with wraps."----Coach Poe
WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT THIS LIFT
"The above video was my 10th set of 10 with my first 5sets with 295 for 8 and my last 5sets toying around with 240 for 10reps on the pushpress. I thought I would go lite and have a little fun. I practiced a speed technique the first 3 reps, then lockouts, then my stablization turning rep. Sorry PHDs, can't learn this technique in your books"---Matt Poe
"This was my 10th set with 295, probably 300 with all the rust. I am working on about a 4 intensity level this day. Luckily, my mind was in it enough to push the weight up for 5 sets of 10 with 295 and another 5 sets of 7 with 295"---Coach Poe
"Again, I am doing 10 set training with 290. This is my 10th set. I went the first 5 sets of 10 reps and the last 5 sets I went 5,5,5,6, and 8 reps. My intensity still remains low, but it is still more than what you do on your best day!!!----Coach Poe
"Repping the trapbar is most challenging, especially with no chalk, and 545 pounds. This was my tenth set. My lower back was not working. I swear my shoulders did most of the pulling along with my thumbs....HEART"----Coach Poe
"Yes, I love to pushpress. It is the only lift left besides the deadlift that the sport of Powerlifting has not destroyed. Nothing better than the 12th set, Boston, and good old fashioned PAIN"---Coach Poe
"Working on 13 set protocols...finishing like a champ...Here is my rep scheme for 13 sets...10,10,10,10,9,8,9,9,8,7,6,6,...7 on the last set."----Coach Poe
WARNING: Never lift with a space heater in the heat!!
"The first hot day on the patio of 2007. I made sure the temp in my work area was over 100 degrees with my white space heater. This was my 12th set of 3 with 507 pounds. I did these sets with 45 secs rest in between. I actually felt like throwing up"---Coach Poe
WARNING: EVERY TIME I WORKOUT, YOU ARE BECOMING MORE DISTANT
"This was my 5th set of 20 reps with 68 seconds rest in between each set and an EXTRA 1 rep for my competition who continues to fall behind me after every one of my workouts. Heart is built in extreme conditions, NOT non-extreme conditions"----Coach Poe
"This was my 20th set of modified box squats with 1 minute intervals. The weight was light, but I was working on straining the lower back as much as I could as you can see with the bend in the waist. This was my last exercise after doing 40 sets of pulls with the straight bar and the trapbar combined"-----M Poe
"My first set was 600 for 1. My second set was 655 for 1. I then put on 550 on for the next 9 sets supersetting them with deep dumbbell squats with 120 pound dummbbells for sets of 10. THIS PROGRESSION TOOK 2.5 HOURS. Below is the true meaning of working until failure. My legs, grip, and lower back would not function anymore. Puking also became a henderance in 100 plus degee weather. Most people ran from the heat today and got worse. I embraced the heat today and got better."---Coach Poe

"I am constantly trying to challenge myself. I try to set myself up for failure at times to strengthen the heart and mind. POWER TIES are 118 seconds of true power and will"----Coach Poe
"I expect all my athletes to try at all times"----Coach Poe
Below Coach Poe powers a 10 foot railroad tie 40 yards in the sand and comes back with a 20 yard power sprint.
Watch Both Videos!!!
"The truest test of "GRIP STRENGTH" is the Thomas Inch. If you have never executed this lift, you will never understand. The mental preparation is just as intense or more than most lifts in competition"---Matt Poe
"My bicep is still injured, but I am pushing through it. I felt as though I could have hit over 350 today. My timing was perfect"---Matt Poe
Thank you Vanderbilt and Curtis Turner, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for spotting me and recording the lift on my video camera.

"I did not have a very good training cycle on pushpress before the 2006 Texas Strongest Man Competition due to a bumb rotator in the left arm, but my"Spirit Overcame My Body" to win this event by 25 pounds"---Coach Poe
"This really was not much for Matt. I have seen him do much more than this weight in training, with an injury"---Mark Holland
"There is only one true test of strength throughout the weightlifting world---THE PUSHPRESS"---One Of The Founding Fathers of Weightlifting, Bob Hoffman
"I have to say I was very impressed with Josh Bryant (the winner and Matt's training partner) this weekend. The Overhead Press was incredible. Congrats to him and "little" Matt Poe at 255 pounds. Matt showed a lot of intensity and courage going into his first comp like this one. He had great form on the Overhead Press and was a fast learner on everything else. HE IS A GREAT CREDIT TO HIS PROFESSION."
--- Ed Coan, Considered The Best Powerlifter Ever
"As far as true pressing overhead, from a standing position, this lift is definitely harder than the Olympic Overhead. You have to press the bar from one position strainght up. You don't drop your hips to achieve extension of the arms. This leads to the bar always staying in the same place and never really leaving the start position. The OVERHEAD PRESS from the standing position moves the bar in a complete range of motion"---Matt Poe
The below lift is Matt's 350 pound press in front of the legendary Ed Coan at the 2005 Atlantis Strongest Man In America Contest. This lift holds 3rd place in the Kazmier Format of Powerlifting. We commend Matt in following in his father's footsteps in this lift. His form is "Picture Perfect".

"My first shoulder workout with my new 150 pound IronHeart made dumbbells that were given to me by my old friend Mike "IronHeart" Parks who was a great lifter and has a true love for the sport. Thank you Mike for believing in me all these years"-----Matt Poe
WARNING: NEVER TRY THE LIFT IN THE VIDEO
"I would not call this a power snatch or an Olympic snatch, but I would call it POWER!!! This is the first time that I have tried a one armed movement. The pioneers of weightlifting regularly perfected one arm movements such as the above and bent lifts."---Coach Poe
COACH POE REPS 330 POUNDS AT 2:30 AM
"Quit complaining about making time to workout. Matt Poe is not considered one of the best because he does not make time to workout".....Webmaster
VIDEO (1) PREPARATION
Coach Poe prepares as one of MTV's camera-men is in his face.
VIDEO (2) EXECUTION
"MTV will always remember me, my desire, and most of all my demonstration of RAW POWER. I just did what they wanted me to do. It was just another day at the office. It was just another rep with 330, not that much really, but enough for the spectators. I love cameras in my face, no sweat. They left having experienced the true meaning of heart"----Coach Poe
Mental discipline is what it takes to prepare yourself to be a champion.
"I am a big believer in closing my eyes to visualize movements as I execute lifts. Bruce Lee was a big believer in this theory. I also believe in cold weather training which improves grip strength greatly" ------ Matt Poe
The video below is executed in 25 degree weather and complete darkness. Matt does 2 reps with 490 pounds eyes closed.

The below type of curls has helped to heal my bicep tendon. I never do arms, so, this routine of 1 set of 60 reps in each arm once per week has been rather productive along with internal and external rotation exercises.
"Below are a few more ocean sled pull takes that we were able to salvage. This work was very hard. I used all of my leg strength battling the currents and the wind. It was a real problem keeping the weight on the sled as well because of the jerking and undertoe".
"Our camera basically malfunctioned on every take. My film crew (Patrick McKennon and Mark Poe) should get an award for my hostile attitude between takes. I blamed them for most of the bad takes..BUT we found out later the camera was BAD. I am sorry fellas"!
"You have to remember that the longer the day went on, the colder the water and the colder temperature outside became..

My dad was known for taking 425 pounds of the rack, without a warm-up and executing 15 reps RAW. He was Mr.Nashville in the Benchpress in 1964. His spotter, Charles Estes, in this picture was 1964 AAU Mr.Tennessee in bodybuilding and held numerous national titles as a bodybuilder.
